Avoriaz 1800 Ski Resort

Avoriaz is located in the Portes du Soleil, one of the world’s largest ski areas that straddles the French-Swiss border. Here, you can explore over 650km of slopes with a single lift pass.

Avoriaz has the highest average snowfall in the whole of France, making it a fantastic destination, especially as it is just 90 minutes from Geneva airport.

The groomed slopes around Avoriaz are ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. However, there are some excellent off-piste sections accessible from lifts and with touring equipment. It’s best to book an instructor or a guide to find the best spots.

You’ll find some excellent and varied snowparks around Avoriaz. Therefore, it’s a great place to dial in your freestyle skills.

Avoriaz is a unique ski resort, thanks to its unusual architecture and the fact that it’s car-free. Once you arrive at the resort, you get around on foot, skis, snow-cat, or horse-drawn sleigh.

Much of the accommodation in Avoriaz is ski-in-ski-out. This makes it an excellent place for families and beginners, as you can get to any of Avoriaz’s excellent ski schools with minimum effort. This is even better when you choose one of the more luxurious accommodation options.

You’re never far away from a bar or restaurant in the whole of the Portes du Soleil. Avoriaz has many places to eat and drink on and off the slopes, including an igloo bar and the notorious Folie Douce.

Avoriaz has plenty of other activities aside from skiing and snowboarding. You can expect electric fat bike tours, snowmobile excursions, an indoor tropical waterpark, paragliding, and a bowling alley.

There are 12 ski resorts in 2 countries (8 ski resorts in France + 4 ski resorts in Switzerland) which are part of Les Portes du Soleil ski area which include: Abondance (FR), Avoriaz 1800 (FR), Champéry (CH), Châtel (FR), La Chapelle d’Abondance (FR), Les Gets (FR), Montriond (FR), Morgins (CH), Morzine-Avoriaz, St Jean d’Aulps (FR), Torgon (CH), Val-dilliez Les Crosets Champoussin (CH).

January 6th to Feb 10th 2024 is the cheapest and best time to go (low season), followed by 9th March until mid-April 2024 (the shoulder season).

For Australians travelling to France to ski during our January summer holidays, we benefit from the cheaper rates on offer in the French ski resorts’ low season.  This happens to be when the French and Europeans go back to work and school after the 2 week Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Europeans and the Brits flock to the resorts through February into March (DO NOT TRAVEL from 10th Feb to 9th Mar 2024 as this is the French school holidays). The slopes are extremely busy, the queues at the lifts are long and the price for accommodation is very expensive during that time.  Even all the restaurants are booked out!

Typically, in January, the snow is dry with the largest build up. It is also the coldest time, so you will need to make sure that you dress warmly. It is still wise to choose a high-altitude resort in case mother nature has not been kind earlier in the season. Bear in mind though, that snow-making is used to supplement natural snowfall in high traffic areas.

So, not only is January the cheapest time to go skiing in the French Alps, it is also the best time to go thanks to the weather conditions, the lack of queues, more availability and choice of accommodation and you get to breathe fresh air with your loved ones, rather than with thousands of other people!
